North Korea threatens ‘shocking’ consequences after claims of US spy plane incursion

The powerful sister of the North Korean ruler, Kim Jong-un, has claimed that Pyongyang’s warplanes repelled a US spy plane flying over nearby waters on Monday, warning of “shocking” consequences if the US continues reconnaissance there.

The US and South Korea dismissed the North’s accusations and urged it to refrain from any acts or rhetoric that raise tensions.

North Korea has made a number of similar threats over alleged US reconnaissance activities, but its latest statement came after a period of heightened animosity following North Korea’s barrage of missile tests earlier this year.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was present as the ruling Workers’ party’s central committee met to discuss foreign policy and economic campaigns.
