Hungarian Grand Prix extends F1 deal to 2032

The Hungarian Grand Prix will remain on the Formula One calendar until at least 2032 after a five-year extension was announced on Saturday.

Formula One said in a statement the contract extension from 2027 came after the announcement of significant refurbishment of the Hungaroring, including a new pit building and main grandstand.

Hungary has been part of the world championship since 1986 with its circuit some 20km outside Budapest.

Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton has won there a record eight times.

More than 300,000 fans are expected to attend this weekend’s race, up from 290,000 last year.

“To see the commitment from the promoter in Hungary to develop the facilities and further enhance the experience for fans is another important step and something we want to see all our events doing,” said F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali.

Hungaroring president Zsolt Gyulay said the circuit renovations were expected to be completed by 2026.

“Given the astonishing rise in F1’s global popularity, which now sees more venues than ever before competing to join the calendar, today’s signing marks a hugely significant achievement for us,” he Filming for the as-yet untitled Formula One movie starring Brad Pitt is continuing at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix despite a Hollywood actors’ strike.

The actors joined film and television writers on U.S. picket lines for the first time in 63 years last week as they demanded higher streaming-era pay and curbs on the use of artificial intelligence.

Some media had reported filming for the Apple production was shut down as a result but seven-times Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, who is a co-producer, said that was not the case.

“Fortunately for us you can see the team is here, APX is here, and we’re still filming luckily with the drivers that we have,” the Mercedes driver told reporters at the Hungaroring on Thursday.

“So hopefully we can continue to still get some important parts of the filming done.”

APX GP is the name of a fictional 11th team featured in the movie, with Pitt playing an older driver coming out of retirement to race an up-and-coming rookie played by Damson Idris.

As at Silverstone two weeks ago, APX has a garage and pitwall position at the Hungaroring and slots on the schedule for the production’s cars to have time on track between sessions.

The www.the-race.com website reported no Screen Actors Guild (SAG) members would be working at the Hungaroring. It was not immediately clear whether Pitt would attend.

Professional drivers were used to drive the cars for most sessions at Silverstone, although Pitt was reported to have got behind the wheel as well.

Several F1 drivers have expressed their excitement for the project with Hamilton, Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc posing for a photo with Pitt at Silverstone.

The Apple TV film is being directed by Joseph Kosinski, the director of “Top Gun: Maverick”, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. READ MORE
